Juan Arevalo

I spent years teaching math before I wrote production code. Today I build Java Spring Boot and Angular services at Citibank, lead AI enablement for the teams around me, run my team's Scrum ceremonies, and help developers adopt new tools. Through all of it, I learn new things quickly and make them easier for the next person.

      1. 2025 → Citibank, Tampa Engineering

Writing the code and running the sprint

        • Software Developer / Developer Services Analyst, Citibank Feb 2023 – present
        • Writing more of the code, leading AI enablement, and serving as the team's Scrum Master.

Reach Four teams supported on AI tools, plus the team's sprint cadence

        • Led design and proof-of-concept of an "AI Agent Skills as a Service" application that gives developers a controlled, secure way to call approved AI agent skills. Built the core Document Mode feature, showcased an MVP at the firm's Tech Con, and delivered it to UAT.
        • Named AI Enablement Lead for two technology projects and evaluated three new AI tools, supporting four teams through AI-template submissions and hands-on onboarding.
        • Learned Spring Boot on my own and became the team's most proficient Java developer, building full-stack microservices with Spring Boot backends, Angular frontends and Python services on MongoDB and PostgreSQL.
        • Maintained zero security vulnerabilities in the applications I developed, as validated by SonarQube and Snyk scans.
        • Helped create a coding workshop platform for evaluating and upskilling developers, co-hosting two workshops that onboarded 15+ new hires, and coached three new team members.
        • Helped mainframe teams adopt version control by coordinating communications, running forums to resolve blockers, and onboarding teams to GitHub Enterprise.
        • Built developer-productivity dashboards with live data visualization so senior leadership can track engineering metrics.
        • Became the team's Scrum Master: daily scrums, backlog grooming, retrospectives, and the Jira Kanban board, and helped other teams configure their own boards.
        • Two years after joining, my manager rated my technical skills on par with mid-level developers.

The most proficient Java programmer on the team.

Next: owning initiatives from the first problem statement, before the requirements are written.

      2. 2024 Citibank, Tampa Engineering

        Owning an initiative

        • Same role, larger scope. I went from supporting rollouts to running one.

        Reach 2,600+ licensed developers

        • Took over GitHub Copilot adoption for 2,600+ licensed users after kickoff and ran it with little oversight. Active use reached 90%, above the 85% target.
        • Answered every developer who reported a Copilot problem within 24 hours, staying with them through chats and calls and pulling in experts when needed.
        • Wrote outreach emails that anticipated common install problems and linked self-service fixes. The department now reuses them as templates.
        • With my team, built and deployed a three-component microservice app with a Python backend and Angular UI, shipped through GitHub Enterprise and the firm's CI/CD tool.
        • Learned Tableau from scratch and published a DORA-metrics dashboard to the development server for tracking team delivery trends.

        The blueprint for future successes.

Manager, on the Copilot rollout, 2024 annual review

Fast, patient support is what turns a mandate into real adoption.

      3. 2023 Citibank, Tampa Engineering

        Connecting teams to new tools

        • Joined Citibank on the Developer Services team Feb 2023

        Reach 15+ application teams interviewed

        • Joined the team that owned adoption of the firm's new CI/CD deployment tool under a regulatory mandate. Helped build the process to contact, interview and track application teams from scoping to production.
        • Ran 15+ scoping interviews and followed about 10 teams through their pipeline migrations, meeting with delivery managers to clear blockers before deadlines.
        • As a team, we raised production compliance for new apps from 80% to 88.5% and attestation from 67% to 88%, a strong point in the regulator's review.
        • Taught myself Maven and Gradle and built identical Java projects to compare them. Recommended Gradle for new applications.
        • Served as a key coordinator of annual technology conferences, including a firm-wide Tech Con with 20+ teams and 600+ attendees, connecting previously disconnected teams to share solutions.

Excellent communication skills … a key element in getting our application teams to onboard.

      Personal projects

      Self-hosted homelab

A two-node Proxmox cluster running 4 Debian/Ubuntu Docker servers, 2 TrueNAS VMs and an OPNsense router. The network is split into 3 VLANs (trusted, IoT, public apps), with tiered TrueNAS storage, redundant Pi-hole DNS, and a Tailscale mesh connecting every site.

      Ansible automation

Playbooks that provision new servers and patch 5 servers and 3 desktop VMs. Patching went from a monthly manual SSH round to automated weekly updates that finish in minutes, and the same playbooks manage the Proxmox hosts.

      Self-hosted CI/CD with Komodo

Every merge to main triggers a webhook that builds a tagged image, publishes it to a self-hosted registry, and deploys it across 4 Docker hosts. It delivers 4 apps, with failure alerting and a staging environment planned next.

      Secure public hosting

Home-hosted apps are served at juanhomelab.app through a DigitalOcean VPS running Caddy, which forwards traffic over Tailscale so no home ports are open. Domains and TLS run through Cloudflare, with public apps isolated on their own VLAN.

      Fishguesser and other apps

Co-developed Fishguesser, a daily puzzle game in Vite and vanilla TypeScript, plus a personal profile site and two Discord bots, all deployed through the same pipeline.

      PC build and graphics

A custom desktop I keep upgrading, plus a from-scratch Minesweeper clone and a web-based ray tracer built on graphics libraries I wrote in C++ and Java.
